| I landed good numbers of small weakfish last night after dark. |
I stumbled on a rare pile of weakfish last night while fishing for stripers. These fish that most RI fishermen call squeteague were abundant back in the 1970's but have been rare in recent times. This year there have been some sporadic catches of them reported but very few numbers.
Last night I was using a 3-inch NLBN paddle tail on a NLBN half ounce jighead and that seemed to do the trick. I got them on a light 7 foot outfit. I landed a total of 7 of them and had a lot of other hits. They were all small, averaging about 12 inches, but they were strikingly beautiful specimens with gold sparkly scales and snow white bellies.
This has certainly been a fall of unpredictable fishing, and my weakfish night certainly back that up. Nothing would surprise me from here to the end of the fall.
By the way, I did catch a couple of stripers also last evening in some rough, white water, so they are still around but not in any numbers.
